Outdoor Dining: Sidewalk Café/ Parking Spaces
As of March 22, 2021, Governor Cuomo lifted the yellow zone restrictions in Newburgh. Businesses will be given an opportunity to expand their dining options outdoors or within parking areas, if the space permits. The City will provide safety barriers or barricades to close off selected areas for outdoor dining. Businesses who are interested in taking advantage of the City’s expanded Sidewalk Café permits, or who would like to take advantage of street closures or socially distanced events, should review the following guidelines here.
Summer Outdoor Fitness Classes
The City of Newburgh is seeking proposals from local instructors who are interested in hosting another season of the summer outdoor fitness program. Instructors are needed to lead exercise classes in the Downing Park Amphitheater. Classes must be offered free of charge to the public, although instructors are welcome to use a donation-based or pay-what-you-can model.
Instructors interested in teaching a class should email nedward@cityofnewburgh-ny.gov with the following:
- Description of activity
- Schedule of how often you will teach
- Days and times during which you would prefer to offer the activity
- Describe how social distancing and sanitation will be enforced
- Describe your fitness instruction qualifications
- Insurance coverage, if available
Play Streets Areas (Rolling Slow Streets)
The City of Newburgh is designating streets throughout Newburgh as Play Streets to help facilitate social distancing in neighborhoods. The City will close neighborhood streets to through traffic throughout the summer. “Play-packs” will be provided with masks, hand sanitizer, activities-in-a-box (sidewalk chalk, hoola hoops, jump ropes etc.), information on social distancing and more. Residents and visitors still have access to drive and park on these streets, as long as they drive slowly and through-traffic is limited. Parking, resident access and garbage pick-up schedules will not be changed with Play Streets. Feel free to share your space to promote recreation, play and fun while being safe.

Love Your Block Mini-Grants
The Planning and Development Department has funding available for Community Based Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, Tenants Associations and Block Associations to hold Neighborhood Clean-up Block Parties. Funds can be used to pay for a dumpster(s), carting fees, food, refreshments and entertainment for a socially distanced block party to follow cleanup activities. Residents can gather together to remove garbage, debris, furniture and other bulk items that are difficult to transport. Grants are on a first come, first serve basis and money is reimbursable. Applications will be accepted starting April 13th, 2021.
