Members of UNICO, an Italian-American service organization, worked with city officials on a three-year project that resulted in the 1992 dedication of the statue of Christopher Columbus and the park commemorating Columbus' voyage of 1492. The statue was molded in Carrara, Italy, then cast by Pompeian Studios in Bronxville. Inscribed on the side of the monument facing the river is a tribute to the explorer and his vision, courage, and determination.
