Cities and towns across the country are revitalizing downtown and neighborhood commercial areas. Improvements to building facades have proven to be an effective tool for this revitalization.
Commercial revitalization has also long been a high priority in the City of Newburgh. Therefore, the City is targeting the revitalization of the East End Business District through a façade improvement program to be administered by its Local Development Corporation (LCD). The program is targeted to lower Broadway and Liberty Street in the vicinity of Washington's Headquarters. This target area is within the City's east End Historic District.
The façade improvement program is established, in part, because the rehabilitation of buildings in this area is typically more expensive than in other portions of the City. The targeted area is also the center for several governmental, cultural and institutional buildings that, in turn, make it a focal point for small business activity.
