According its charter, the mission of the Arts and Cultural Commission is to advise the City Government and its agencies on issues related to the development of art and culture in Newburgh, to encourage tourism, promote arts and culture as an integral part of community life, to foster a creative environment that reflects the diversity of the City of Newburgh, and to increase the role played by the arts in education in all its forms.
Progress
During its first two years of operation, the Arts & Culture Commission delivered a set of procedures and recommendations to the City of Newburgh for the following:
- Acceptance of gifts of artwork to the City.
- Management of an arts calendar.
- Hiring of the Cultural & Economic Director.
- Nominations for new commissioners.
- Procedure for Commission support of arts events.
Ongoing projects include:
- Survey local artist population.
- Market and promote local cultural events.
- Create a Newburgh Center for the Arts.
- Present one major cultural event.
Formation of the Commission
The Newburgh City Council created the Arts and Cultural Commission on Dec. 12, 2005 [press release]. The resolution forming the commission was adopted as an amendment to the City Code (pdf). On Feb. 14, 2006, the City Council appointed the initial slate of 15 Commissioners with terms ranging from one to three years. The Commission first met on Feb. 25.
